Forward-looking projects and surpassed climate targets

In the reporting year, RUAG Real Estate was positioned as a strategic business area of the RUAG Group and is taking on responsibility as a new permanent member of the executive board. At its main locations in Emmen and Thun, RUAG Real Estate has pushed ahead with key site and project developments, with one eye on the future.

Site development in Thun

The Thun site is an important development hub for RUAG. RUAG Real Estate is currently laying the foundations for further growth and technological development. Within the so-called Tryber district, the further development of the RUAG campus and the new Thun-Nord S-Bahn (suburban railway) station are in planning. The “Cartridge Factory Renovation” and “Restaurant Zündkapsel Commercial Kitchen Installation” projects are continuing to progress according to plan.

Project developments to drive growth

With a view to expanding the Business Area C5I, RUAG Real Estate is renovating an existing building for office use and integrating the CFBLNet infrastructure (Combined Federated Battle Laboratories Network) into the C5I-Campus during ongoing operations. In order to exploit synergies between the Armed Forces Logistics Organisation and the strategic Business Area SENSORS, COMMUNICATION & GROUND, RUAG Real Estate is developing a high-bay warehouse, a block warehouse and a multi-purpose warehouse, in collaboration with armasuisse. Aerospace Cluster in Emmen

At the Emmen site, a site development concept was created, which was closely tailored to the needs of the strategic Business Area AIR. A new design plan will form the legal planning framework for the future of the Aerospace Cluster in Emmen, enabling the coexistence of RUAG and its strategic partners. In the first construction phase, a multi-purpose warehouse will be built in early 2026, designed as a flexible spatial structure that is tailored to the needs of the user.

Climate targets significantly exceeded thanks to the district heating system in Emmen

The switch from fossil fuels to district heating as a heat energy source, combined with the construction of a district heating and peak load center on the RUAG site in Emmen, has had a significant impact over the last two winter periods. RUAG has thus managed to significantly exceed its climate targets. The CO2 emissions from the nine operating sites fell from around 3,500 t CO2eq in 2021 to around 1,100 t in 2024. This amounts to emissions that are 69 % lower than those specified under the reduction path agreed with the Federal Office for the Environment. Furthermore, all electricity requirements have been covered entirely by renewable energies since 2021.
