RUAG presents Sustainability Report 2024

RUAG improved its sustainability in the 2024 reporting year and achieved or in some cases even exceeded the targets of the "Exemplary Energy and Climate" initiative of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy.

Energy efficiency

Compared to the baseline year 2020, the aim is to reduce energy consumption per reference value by 6% by 2026 and by 10% by 2030. The focus here is on structural and energy-related measures in buildings and building infrastructure. Compared to 2023 with -2.48 %, the result in 2024 is massively improved energy efficiency with + 4.88 %. This is due to the fact that the entire RUAG site in Emmen has been heated with district heating instead of gas since 2024. A new site heating system using renewable energy is being planned for the RUAG site in Bern.

Increasing the share of renewable energy

By 2030, 100% of the electricity consumed is to come from renewable energy sources. RUAG has already been meeting this target since 2021 by generating 100% of the electricity it consumes from hydropower, wind power and solar energy. By 2026, the share of oil and gas consumption is to be reduced by 50 % compared to 2020. By 2030, the reduction should be 60%. In terms of RUAG Real Estate Ltd's real estate portfolio, the aim is to achieve complete CO2 neutrality by 2030 by converting all oil and gas heating systems to renewable energy sources.

Ecological electricity production

In order to support the Swiss Confederation in phasing out nuclear energy, we are increasingly focusing on ecological in-house electricity production. Our goals: By 2026, RUAG Real Estate Ltd will produce 1,600 MWh/a of solar power from its own photovoltaic systems and by 2030, in-house solar power production will be increased to 3,000 MWh/a.

CO2 reduction with heating replacement

Switching from gas heating to district heating from the Perlen waste incineration plant on the entire RUAG Emmen site makes a major contribution to CO2 reduction. This will save around 1,000 tons of CO2 per heating period, making a significant contribution to decarbonizing the heating systems. RUAG has also defined the strategic goal of making its real estate portfolio CO2-neutral by 2030. To achieve this, all oil and gas heating systems will be successively replaced by heating systems using renewable energies. In line with the Swiss Sustainable Building Standard (SNBS), particular attention will be paid to the use of sustainable building materials when renovating existing properties and constructing new ones.

RUAG's Sustainability Report 2024 also includes progress, developments and targets in the areas of governance and social affairs.
